A thought communicated through words is a second-generation version of the original idea. Once interpreted by someone else it becomes a third-generation idea. Like recording over a cassette tape multiple times, the original loses clarity. A copy of a copy, and so on. The purpose of this series of paintings is reflective of my fascination with the deconstruction of communication. Since I was young my ideas and thoughts have always fumbled out of my mouth and I rarely have heard myself explain what I originally thought fluently enough that I am satisfied to let a person walk away thinking they have a clear understanding what I was trying to say. Even if it made sense, the interpretation is not necessarily what I intended. Now imagine someone trying to explain what I said – it just gets worse (like the origin of rumors). Better for me to not say anything at all. |
